One-on-one Tutoring

Every week a tutor will visit your home to provide one-on-one English tutoring. Focus is given to basic language skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening). Topics of instruction can be tailored to meet your particular learning needs and daily language requirements. Tutoring is provided free of charge.

Carefully read over the eligibility criteria below and if you are eligible, please call our offices at 613-232-8566 to register

Who is Eligible?

To qualify for ELTOC one-to-one programs you must be:

  1. An adult newcomer (18 years or older);
  2. A permanent Resident of Canada (Landed Immigrant) or Convention Refugee;
  3. Able to provide proof of status in Canada with an original of one of the following documents:
  • Record of Landing (Landed Immigrant-IMM 1000)
  • Notice of Decision Letter (Convention Refugee)
  • Minister's Permit (Case type 86, 87, 88 or 89 only)
  • Approval in Principle Letter
  • Employment Authorization (case type 27 only)
  • Student Authorization (Case type 37 only)
  • Visitor's Record (Case type 17 only);
  1. An Ontario Resident; and
  2. Unable to attend other English programs.

NOTE: ELTOC does not provide daily English programs for newcomers. If you are looking for this type of program, please contact the Language Assessment and Resource Centre (LARC).

ELTOC is a non-profit charitable organization, funded by Citizenship & Immigration Canada and private donations.


What will I learn?

Topics can include:

  • buying food
  • taking the bus
  • visiting the doctor
  • talking on the telephone
  • reading newspapers, mail or grocery flyers
  • using the library
  • accessing social services
  • speaking to a child's teacher
  • preparing for the citizenship tests
  • preparing for a job interview
  • searching for housing
  • job specific vocabulary
  • and much more

You can also learn about Canadian culture and customs.

 

Saturday morning and Tuesday evening

 Drop-in Classes

 

Classes are open to all (immigrants, refugees, visitors, and Canadian citizens).

Tuesday evenings from 7:00 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.
and
Saturday
mornings from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.


 

Students are asked to contribute $2 a class to cover basic expenses.

NOTE: On Weekends and after hours on weekdays, students must use the intercom system located at the side (wheelchair accessible) entrance in order to access the building. **Students attempting to enter the facility through the main door will NOT be admitted.**

There are no drop-in classes on holidays and during the summer months (July and August)**
